It's not every day you have the crazy idea of walking the length of Aotearoa New Zealand, but when you do it sticks with you until eventually one day you decide to give it a go. What a great way to get some exercise, see some beautiful countryside and have one hell of a life experience?!

This blog documents my experience of taking on Te Araroa, The Long Pathway from Cape Reinga to Bluff--a journey of over 3000km from end to end. Will I make it? I don't know, but I'm keen to try! I'm no fitness freak (rather a confirmed couch potato) so aside from the obligatory assortment of bush-walking paraphernalia I'm setting out with little more than a desire to walk and the hope that my "two feet and a heartbeat" will be enough to get me through...

Note To Readers: I did it! I finished Te Araroa!! Unfortunately I am way behind on my blog but I promise to keep working on it so that you too can finish the adventure. Keep watching this space!

Committed...

Well, after spending the last three hours agonising over different transport options and costs I have finally bitten the bullet and pressed the "pay now" button on the lesser of several evils--as you may expect, leaving the booking flights to the last minute doesn't leave you with many desirable options!

I had hoped to stopover in Wellington and Auckland to catch up with friends I haven't seen in a while, but as the planning process has already dragged out two weeks longer than I had hoped (through no one's fault but my own) I decided I can't spare the time. If I want to be home for Christmas (which I do!) I'll have to complete the North Island in approx. 70 days--perfectly within the prescribed completion time. Unfortunately I'm anticipating it will take me at least 10 days longer to get to Wellington...but it all depends on so many variables I'm not going to stress about it yet--will wait to see how I go on the trail!

So, long story short, a week from today I should find myself sitting (well, at this hour hopefully sleeping...) in a motel room in Kaitaia, resting up before catching a lift up to Cape Reinga to begin the 'long walk'...

  1. Update: It suddenly occurred to me that I can't take my gas canister on the plane...but my lift up to Cape Reinga leaves before the camping shop in Kaitaia opens. Cue mercy call to my accommodation in Kaitaia who have wonderfully agreed to go and buy a canister for me this week and add it to my bill :)
